Aldo Roma obtained his PhD in Music and the Performing Arts from Sapienza University of Rome, with a thesis on the critical edition of the libretto of San Bonifazio (1638) by Giulio Rospigliosi and Virgilio Mazzocchi, and the development and layering of comic strategies in the dramaturgy of the seventeenth-century opera. He was a Postdoctoral research fellow at the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA) of the Universiteit van Amsterdam, with a project on intermediality and the use of the digital image in the contemporary opera stage direction. He is a member of the editorial boards of the journals Biblioteca Teatrale and Sig.ma. Quaderni di letterature comparate, teatro e arti dello spettacolo. His research interests are directed primarily at the theatre and music theatre history, historiography, and philology with a particular focus on seventeenth-century Italian theatre and opera, the contemporary opera stage direction, and the deaf theatre community.
